Busan Global Village, an English immersion camp in the country's southern port city, opened yesterday.

Located in the center of the city, the English village is expected to play a crucial role in helping local elementary and middle school students learn not only the language but also the cultures of English-speaking countries.

The BGV houses various imitation facilities - an airport, shopping mall, bank, hotel, post office, bus stop and police station -- to promote the study of English and to encourage an appreciation of English culture. The BGV also houses the nation's first English-only library which contains more than 22,000 English books, as well as various visual and audio learning materials.

A total of 25 native English-speaking teachers and 20 Korean teachers currently work at the village. The program being offered at the BGV is designed to supplement what students already learn from school textbooks, officials said.
